Chapter

Yes. She was very much scared of what might happen if she broke the seal on the secret crush she’d been harboring.

She needed to keep him firmly in the big, bad lawyer category and not in the hulking, smell-good, hot guy category. The hot guy who was going to share her bed in a minute if he’d ever let go of her damn hand and make an agreement.

“I’m never scared,” she said.

He tugged her closer.

I am such a liar.

“Great. Prove it. This was your mistletoe. I expect you to deliver on the implied obligation you created when hanging said mistletoe.”

“Did anyone ever tell you it’s supremely unattractive when you speak like a law book?” she lied, sticking her chin out with defiance.

“You don’t find me attractive? Noted.” He sent her an angled, chagrined smile.

Right. Not attractive. He just looked like a fourteenth-century Scottish clan leader who had decided he should claim a bride, and she desperately wished it would be her.

“Nope. Not attractive in,” she took a shaky breath, “the least.”

He still held her hand tight in his. Just get it over with. She leaned up on her tiptoes and gave him a quick, chaste peck on the cheek. Her lips barely made contact with his stubbled skin, and she met his eyes with defiance.

The cheeky bastard still held her hand.

He looked impressed. “I applaud your use of a loophole. That was, by definition, but not in spirit, a kiss.”

He let go of her hand. It stupidly felt like it had been abandoned. Did she like the feeling of his hand holding hers?

Ridiculous.

He was still standing far too close to her.

“Well,” she took a breath. “Night roomie.” She started for the bedroom.

“Peri, wait.”

She turned around, and his eyes locked with hers. There was a challenge in them, but also something else she couldn’t figure out.

“Come back.” He was still standing under the mistletoe. She stopped about a foot away. “Don’t be a weirdo. I don’t bite.”

She took a few steps toward him until she was almost under the mistletoe. It was hard for her to draw in a full breath. Her insides felt jittery like she might take flight if she met his eyes. She found a very interesting spot on the ceiling to inspect.

Don’t be weird. Maybe he wanted to talk about their schedule tomorrow, like who would take a shower or if she’d help shovel the driveway so he could leave—

“I’m pretty shit at things like apologies and thank yous, so I might fuck this up.” He took a deep breath and caught her eyes.

Innnteresting. A smirk crossed her face, waiting for the high and mighty Bennett McWillams I-know-everything, Esquire to admit she did something right.

“You saved my life today and my best friend. I owe you everything.” His voice cracked, and he rubbed a hand over his face, trying to keep it together. “It’s not easy for me to admit that I was so turned around that I’m not sure I could have gotten home. Jax is my everything.
